A second worry for those with emergency notifications on their phones came from an earthquake message advising locals to seek cover. The purpose of those notifications is to allow people an extra few seconds to evacuate to a safer location in case of a strong earthquake.
Smaller aftershocks followed it in succession. The quake on Wednesday also occurs just one day after the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred 34 years ago. Interestingly, the U.S. Geological Survey is encouraging communities and families to participate in its annual earthquake preparedness simulation, known as the “great shakeout” on Thursday.
