  • On October 10, as England recovered from their crushing defeat by New Zealand in their World Cup debut, Dawid Malan bashed 140 before Reece Topley decimated the Bangladesh top order.
  • The reigning champions prevailed by 137 runs after amassing 364-9 in Dharamsala, thanks in large part to in-form Malan’s career-best one-day international total of five sixes and Topley’s 4-43.
  • The score could have gone considerably higher, but England was able to lose from 296-2 in the 40th over thanks to some disciplined bowling from paceman Shoriful Islam and off-spinner Mahedi Hasan, who each claimed seven wickets.
  • Liton Das struck three successive fours in Chris Woakes’ opening over as Bangladesh got off to a fast start.
  •  When Moeen Ali was substituted by the towering Topley, they were immediately reduced to 14-2 because Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto were unable to keep up with his pace and movement.
  • When the captain of the team, Shakib Al Hasan, was struck by the pacer, the score increased to 26-3. Then, costly Woakes joined in, luring an edge from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and England captain Jos Buttler took the catch behind the stumps.
  • Despite the devastation, Liton appeared unconcerned at the other end, scoring 50 runs off of 38 balls as Bangladesh attempted to reorganize.
  • However, his impressive run of runs was cut short in the 21st over when he edged a slower ball from Woakes behind to Buttler, leaving him out for 76.
  •  Mushfiquir Rahim (51) sliced him to deep third man, into the safe hands of Adil Rashid, as Topley celebrated his fourth wicket.
  • As the run rate increased, the outcome appeared more and more certain, and the game stopped being a significant contest, petering out despite some late hitting.
  •  Adil Rashid was able to catch him when Mushfiquir Rahim (51), who was celebrating his fourth wicket, cut him to deep third man.
  • The game stopped being a compelling match as the run rate rose, and it eventually petered out despite some late hitting as the outcome became increasingly clear.

 Malan is a leading actor

  • At the scenic Himalayan venue, Malan, who has replaced Jason Roy at the top of the order, had scored his fourth ODI century in 2023 in an impressive display of timing and power.
  • His opening partner Jonny Bairstow, who was playing in his 100th ODI, reached fifty but was dismissed for 52 by Shakib, leaving England 115-1 in the 18th over.
  • Joe Root, a former Test captain, continued where Bairstow left off by indicating his intentions with a ramp shot for six.
  • Malan, 36, scored a brilliant century in 91 balls before exploding for 20 runs in the span of just four balls during a Mehidy over.
  • After defeating Afghanistan in their initial game in India, Bangladesh finally made the crucial breakthrough when Mahedi dismissed Malan.
  • Ben Stokes’ injury prevented him from moving up the order, so Buttler did so instead. He temporarily sputtered before leaving for 20 off 10 balls.
  • By top-edging a Shoriful delivery that was caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur, Root, who had previously been Graham Gooch as England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, was holed out for 82.
  • Following that, England lost momentum as Liam Livingstone’s first ball off the stump was flattened.
  • The target proved to be far above Bangladesh, despite the fact that wickets kept falling. Shoriful concluded with 3-75 and Mahedi got 4-71.
  • In a single round-robin system, each of the 10 World Cup teams plays every other team once, with the top four teams moving on to the semifinals.
